Introducing CUBIX Visual and GPU Computing Solutions
Are you looking at Nvidia CUDA-based rendering applications? Or looking for greater GPU acceleration for your Mercury Engine-powered Adobe Creative Suite 5. Or you may want more realtime processing for your DaVinci Resolve color grading suite.
If the answer is yes to any of the above, you'll want to learn more about CUBIX's GPU-Xpander Desktop (pictured above). GPU-Xpander Desktop is a compact, inexpensive PC appliance which provides current PC and Mac Pro workstations with two or four full-length PCI Express x16 slots, plus large power supply and exhaust fans required for operating multiple, high-performance NVIDIA® graphics cards or GPU cards. Aside from Nvidia cards, the expansion unit also supports Blackmagic Design's Decklink HD Extreme card as well as the Red Rocket card.

NEW TRAINING FACILITY
The Media Village has doubled our office space, adding a new, dedicated space for training and workshops. Renovation of the space will conclude in time for our next round of training classes in February. Facilities include a 3D Projector, 58" 3D Plasma Display and surround audio. Pictures in next month's newsletter.
We're also pleased to annouce a new class, "Color Management Workshop" held on 1 and 2 March 2011. Organised together with Cine-tal Systems, this two-day classes will provide participants with a working knowledge in color management for digital film & video production, digital intermediate (DI) & video post production, visual effects (VFX), HD & film print dailies, as well as digital projection. The class is lead by Cine-tal’s Michael Chenery, a leading expert in color science for the digital cinema and video industry.
Professionals in the video and feature film industry responsible for quality control of color across the entire production / post-production workflow should attend, including VFX production supervisors, VFX artists, DI Post-production engineers, CGI/VFX software developers, Digital Imaging Technicians (DITs) and Colorists.
NEW INSTALLATIONS
DaVinci Resolve is fast emerging as the de facto standard in color grading, with recent Resolve Control Surface installations at Zap! Visual Effects and Riot Animation in Manila. Cinemasphere in Jakarta is another recent DaVinci Resolve install, with the Tangent Wave panel.
Pictured on the right is Emil Batungbacal, resident colorist at Zap! Visual Effects. Their setup includes a Blackmagic Design Ultrascope and a 42" Cinemage monitor from Cine-tal.
PRODUCT UPDATES
Now shipping, this major release encompasses artist feedback to deliver continued refinements to core operations whilst also incorporating the latest technology to emerge from The Foundry's highly regarded in-house research team. New features include:
- Introduction of the eagerly anticipated timeline Dope Sheet
- Improvement to rendering performance, flip book playback and 2D tracker integration
- New image-based modelling tools, allows artist to combile a tracked 3D camera with a selection of 2D image features, automatically creating simple scene geometry
- Pixar RenderMan Pro server support
Now available, Version 7.1 is a major update to DaVinci Resolve. Updates include:
- Support for CUBIX PCI-Express expansion chassis, bringing clustered multi-GPU processing to the Mac
- Greater control through upgraded support for Tangent Wave control surface
- Support for JL Cooper CX Eclipse control surface
- Support for new file formats, including Arri Alexa & D21 Arri RAW, Phantom Cine, High Dynamic Range EXR, Sony MPEG-4 SStP, Sony XDCAM etc
- Support for ATI 5770 graphics card for GUI display
- New Stereoscopic 3D color grading controls including timeline slip to sync left and right eye, auto left and right eye color matching, pitch and yaw keystone control and side-by-side and line-by-line rendering
- New additional project configurations including improved drop frame timecode support, 720p50 and 720p conforming, 1080p50, 1080p59.94 and 1080p60 monitoring as well as automatic multi project ColorTraceTM support for transferring digital dailies grades
- New user interface displays including clip count display on the color screen primary grading tab, session duration display on the conform screen, a new slate option to show source clip name and additional autosave options
- Enhances RED grading controls by including REDcolor2 and Adobe 1998 colorspace support, REDgamma2 gammaspace support, automatic camera metadata support for HFlip and VFlip, ganged adjustment of decode settings and support for saving RED metadata in stills for copy and paste.
